Seattle Times Editorial: Done with School Funding? Not Even Close

The editorial board of the Seattle Times has an interesting piece today, you can find it here. Bottom line, there is “still much work to do to keep from shortchanging Washington’s children.”

Another article in today’s paper has an interview with Governor Jay Inslee that doesn’t mention education once. Kind of disappointing.

Salmon in the Schools

Check out this article in the West Seattle Blog!

If you want to check out Highland Park’s tank, it is upstairs in the Blue Pod. I learned from a fourth grade there that the salmon are called Alevin just after hatching, and if the egg is milky in color it won’t hatch.

The 4th graders will release the salmon into the creek at Fauntleroy Park later this Spring.

Thank you Salmon in the Schools, and Ms. Meier and Ms. Rizk, our 4th grade teachers!

Fence salmon need love too.

Dine Out at Anju!

This Thursday, November 21st you can support Highland Park Elementary by going to Anju! They will donate a portion of their proceeds for the day, as long as they know that you are there for HPE!

Anju is a relatively new Korean restaurant and bar in White Center – it has been open for a little over a year and a half and it is delicious!

Here is there link to the Facebook event: Dine Out at Anju!

Click here to see their website, they are located in the alley between 15th and 16th, just south of Carniceria El Paisano.

Remember to tell them you are there for Highland Park!

Salmon Fence Work Party and Reveal

We are getting ready to start installing Salmon!

Last year the PTA and Highland Park Plays began a project to bring a special art piece to our school. Every student and staff member was given the opportunity to paint a wooden salmon cut out. Members of the community who attended events at the school were given smaller cut outs to paint as well, and we are now ready to start hanging them in the playground!

The fronts of the fish are all unique, and from the playground will look like schools swimming around the children playing. From the park and street you will see the backs of the fish have all been painted yellow and blue – our mustang colors!

The installation will take place during the school day this Thursday, November 21st, so please check in with the office if you would like to check it out or lend a hand. We have been working hard to get the fish ready for hanging, to make it go as smoothly as possible.

This Saturday, November 23rd there will be an art project reveal and kickball party, if you are there for conferences come check it out. If you are not having conferences on Saturday come check it out anyway, we would love to see you there! We will be there from 9:30 to 11:00!

If you would like to participate and you have any questions please email us at or click on the contact link above and let us know!

Well, if Aquaman approves…
